‘I can’t believe it’, Messi writes after World Cup win

Argentina’s talisman and newly-crowned World Cup winner Lionel Messi on Sunday night took to his Instagram page to soak in the moment of the World Cup win in Qatar and express his gratitude to his fans, family and country, saying it was an unbelievable moment for him.

Messi led Argentina to defeat France to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1986, when Diego Maradona led the Argentine national team to victory over West Germany.

In a stellar, heart pumping match the two teams went head-to-head up until the last minute with France forward and star man, Kylian Mbappe scoring a hat-trick that levelled the scoreline in extra-time, dragging Argentina to a penalty shootout, where the South American team conquered France 4-2, after a thrilling 120 minutes of game time ended in a 3-3 draw.

Celebrating the win and his team in a moment of pure, undiluted emotion, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, Messi wrote, “CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD!!!!!! So many times I dreamed it, so much I wanted it that I still don’t fall. I can’t believe it.

“Thank you so much to my family, to all who support me and also to all who believed in us. We prove once again that Argentinians when we fight together and united we are able to achieve what we aim.
